Elon Musk is living proof that great wealth does not make for great happiness.

He’s the richest man in the world, the first trillionaire. Yet a new documentary by Oscar-winning filmmaker Alex Gibney, set to make its world premiere this week at the Venice Film Festival, makes the case that Musk is the most miserable and unhappy man in the wold.

“He’s the most miserable man I’ve ever met, ” Gibney says in promoting the documentary, simply titled “Musk.”

He is “no longer interested in checking his worst impulses,” he says, and is in a position to help President Donald Trump subvert the midterm elections.

“Someone who worked closely with Elon told me, ‘He’s the most miserable man I’ve ever met.’ So he’s inflicting his misery on everyone else,” Gibney told the Hollywood Reporter.

Described as an explosive profile of the Tesla, SpaceX and X CEO, who is believed to be the richest man alive, is scheduled to make its world premiere Tuesday, Sept. 8, and open in theaters on Oct. 16.

“We are living in a world where one person’s psychopathology and neuropsychological dysregulation is translating into massive consequence in our politics, in our economy, in our geopolitics,” podcaster Sam Harris, a former friend of Musk’s, says in the film. “It’s completely insane we have one person who’s this chaotic — who’s completely unelected — and has this much power.”

“Musk” also details its subject’s disorderly stewardship of the U.S. Department of Government Efficiency, Trump’s short-lived entity created to reduce bureaucracy that cost 270,000 federal employees their jobs and eliminated billions of dollars in lifesaving aid by defunding the U.S. Agency for International Development.

Musk’s real aim, the documentary suggests, was to collect data on tens of millions of Americans for use as a weapon in future elections.

“It’s fairly clear to me that Trump is hell-bent on corrupting the midterm elections,” Geoffrey Hinton, the Nobel Prize-winning “godfather of AI,” says in the film. “If you wanted to corrupt those midterm elections and you wanted to use AI, all you needed to do was get detailed information on U.S. citizens. And what DOGE did looked like just what you would do.”

Musk famously spent an estimated $290 million to help secure Trump’s presidential win in 2024, an election about which Musk seemed to have disturbingly detailed insight, according to his ex-girlfriend Ashley St. Clair, described by the Hollywood Reporter as “a central figure in the documentary.”

St. Clair says in the film that Musk had a “degree of certainty” about the results before they came in that “I had never seen before.”

“He had told me … he was going to unleash the ‘anomaly in the matrix,’” she says as a text exchange between them appears on-screen in which the viewer sees Musk telling her, “I have ten thousand lasers in space.”

Gibney also includes a disturbing incident from Musk’s childhood, recounted by his father, Errol Musk. The elder Musk recalls a road trip in the family’s native South Africa during which a family friend underwent a medical emergency. Despite lifesaving efforts, the man dies.

Elon, his father says, read a comic book and showed no reaction during the tragedy.

“People assume because he’s very rich that he’s not crazy,” Gibney told the Hollywood Reporter. “But the terrifying thing might be that he’s crazy and he’s very rich and powerful. That’s the warning bell the film sounds.”
