A Congressional investigation into Elon Musk and Donald Trump’s so-called Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) found no assurances that the personal data collected from every American was handled properly, according to a report by the Government Accountability Office.
The first breaking news report out on the investigation broke on Tuesday by a new news organization in the nation’s capital now calling itself The Washington Sun, owned by Robert Allbritton, who launched Politico in 2007 and then sold out to a German publishing company in 2021. Apparently he signed a five year non-complete clause for the sale, which recently expired.
With Politico, an early web publication, Allbritton developed an expertise in federal government agencies by embedding reporters there, developing inside sources, and breaking news stories before other top news outlets like The Washington Post and New York Times.
According to the report, six of the federal agencies that once harbored DOGE staff members are not being transparent with the Government Accountability Office about the ways President Donald Trump and Elon Musk’s cost-cutting operation handled sensitive information, the watchdog said Tuesday.
“Without the ability to examine the requested information, Congress and the public lack assurance that these agencies implemented controls needed to ensure DOGE team members appropriately secured information,” GAO officials wrote in the report.
It’s still not clear that DOGE was careful with its immense access to government systems, because clearly this was not the case.
I began publishing independently on the web two years before Politico, and we reported extensively on DOGE’s practices long before The Washington Sun was created.
“GAO has ample statutory authority to both conduct this work and obtain the information in support of Congress,” the new report indicates. “Despite this clear authority, the agencies did not respond to GAO’s requests for the information needed to fully answer the questions posed by members of Congress. Agencies cited various reasons for not fully responding to GAO’s requests, but their stated reasons do not alter or diminish GAO’s statutory right of access to this information.”
Shortly after Trump was inaugurated in January, 2025, he appointed Musk to lead this alleged government efficiency project. Musk then installed employees across federal agencies, including six investigated by GAO: the Department of Education, the Department of Veterans Affairs, the Small Business Administration, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, and the Securities and Exchange Commission.
But his efforts first began when he illegally infiltrated the Department of the Treasury and the Social Security Administration, which is not cited in the report.
Various DOGE employees gained access to sensitive government information systems, including federal student loan information, health care and insurance data, as well as the Social Security information on every American, and evidence indicates that was fed into Musk’s Artificial Intelligence program Grok and its data center in Memphis, Tennessee.
Both the SBA and the VA did not answer any of GAO’s questions about who within the DOGE team had access to what systems or whether anyone on those teams was following security rules. NOAA also declined to answer the question about security rules.
The remaining agencies provided “partial” information, according to the Congressional report. At times the CFPB answered some of GAO’s questions about access for some DOGE employees, but not for all.
“In January 2026 and April 2026, CFPB declined to provide information that we had requested, asserting, among other things, that the information was redundant of information provided to us, was unnecessary, or that providing it would unnecessarily disrupt bureau Operations,” GAO officials wrote.
Some of the other federal agencies gave different justifications for refusing to answer all of GAO’s questions. The Department of Education cited ongoing litigation, while the Securities and Exchange Commission claimed that GAO doesn’t have the statutory authority to ask for the information.
The SBA, the VA and NOAA did not give any reason for refusing to comply with GAO’s requests.
“The Extent to Which Selected Cybersecurity Controls for IT Security Rules Were
Implemented or Followed at the Reviewed Agencies Could Not Be Determined Based on the Information Provided,” the report concluded.
This should concern every American.

Once the Democrats presumably take over with a majority in the House and perhaps the Senate in 2027 after the 2026 midterm elections, there should be a full investigation into this corruption on the part of the president and his private citizen houndog who should never been allowed access to private government files in the first place.
