What’s the point of jumping on the bandwagon and sharing memes on Facebook or even writing a news column on remembering Sept. 11, 2001?
Those days are long gone and I say “Never Forget” Jan. 6, 2021.
The number one threat of “terrorism” these days does not come from the oil stained sands of the Middle East. It comes from next door, where your neighbor is still hyped up on Trump Insurrection Kool-aid.
It could be the angry Vietnam vet or the cop down the street.
American homes are chock full of guns, including assault rifles, locked and loaded to come after you and your kids at school, the store, your church, etc.
The next biggest threat comes from today’s MAGA Republicans, still denying that Joe Biden is the duly elected president of the United States.
Your right-wing neighbor didn’t listen to Biden’s latest address on the subject of “violent extremism” because it did not play on Fox News, conservative talk radio, Trump’s Truth Social or any of the social media media channels they pay attention to these days.
“Donald Trump and the MAGA Republicans represent an extremism that threatens the very foundations of our Republic,” Biden said. He called it a “battle for the soul of this nation.”
“But there’s no question that the Republican Party today is dominated, driven and intimidated by Donald Trump and the MAGA Republicans,” he said. “And that is a threat to this country.”
“MAGA forces are determined to take this country backwards,” Biden said. “Backwards to an America where there is no right to choose, no right to privacy, no right to contraception, no right to marry who you love.”

So what’s the solution?
“For a long time, we’ve told ourselves that American democracy is guaranteed,” Biden said. “But it’s not. We have to defend it. Protect it. Stand up for it. Each and every one of us.”
“Vote! Vote! Vote,” he chanted at the end of his speech, which has already been eclipsed in this fast paced social media environment and countered with chants of “Go Brandon,” “God Save the Queen,” and “Never Forget” 9/11.
Never forget that there is a critical election coming up on Nov. 8. Every election is critical now.
Do you really want to live in a world again where Mitch McConnell is the Majority Leader in the United States Senate? Where Keven McCarthy is Speaker of the House?
“No, no, no,” you should be chanting on Facebook.
Do you really want to see Trump with a Get Out of Jail Free card to run again for the White House in 2024?
Overwhelm the algorithm and wake the bots up with the hashtag #LockTrumpUp!
Maybe U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland will hear you.
I thought he might listen to Liz Cheney and get the grand jury to indict before the election. Apparently the public pressure was not great enough.
The prosecutors at the Department of Justice are working on it.

But of course a Trump appointed judge has slowed the process.
If you are new to social and political activism, this should be a clear demonstration to you of why elections matter so much. Even one mistake in one election can have course altering consequences.
So please, whatever else you do between now and November, remember to get out and vote. And maybe be nice to your neighbor and ask them to vote against “pseudo-fascism” too.
I’ll be coming down from the mountain on Nov. 1 and back inside the DC Beltway in time to cover the election. Please don’t disappoint us by staying home in this election and not working to protect democracy between now and then. Much depends on it, including the fate of the planet.
