Bully Pulpit: Judge Roy Moore seeks bully pulpit in U.S. Senate – New American Journal graphic by Walter Simon

By Glynn Wilson –

MOBILE, Ala. — It is unclear why the national press should care now, other than the fact that the story is a bit of traffic driving sensational tabloid clickbait, yet a story is making the rounds on Twitter this morning quoting former Ten Commandments judge and Republican Senate candidate Roy Moore claiming he is broke.

In spite of losing in December to Birmingham Democrat Doug Jones and being sued by one of the women who accused him of sexual impropriety during the campaign, Moore has remained defiant and unrepentant. He never conceded defeat, although he never filed the legal paperwork to challenge the outcome of the election. And he continues to engage in an idealogical, partisan, sexist and homophobic rant against the alleged forces of “evil” who are aligned against him in a tawdry attempt to fool poor Christians into sending him money.

The stated goal of the fund raiser is a so-called legal defense fund to defend himself against charges of defamation filed in January by Leigh Corfman, a Gadsden woman, who demands an apology and an end to Moore’s public attacks against her.

Corfman, you may recall, told The Washington Post last November that Moore took her to his house when she was only 14 and he was a 32-year-old district attorney in 1979 and exposed himself to her, undressed her, fondled her and tried to have sex with her. She declined and he took her home and she never went out with him again. Yet Moore denied ever knowing her or having such an encounter, and has maintained all along that he was the victim of a conspiracy by liberals, mainstream Republicans and the media.

“I have no regrets! Together we fought the good fight, we finished our course, and we have kept the faith. And we do not intend to quit!” Moore claims in a statement issued on his Senate campaign Facebook page.

“I now face another vicious attack from lawyers in Washington D. C. and San Francisco who have hired one of the biggest firms in Birmingham Alabama to bring another legal action against me and ensure that I never fight again,” he says. “However, I will trust God that he will allow truth to prevail against the unholy forces of evil behind their attack.”

During the campaign, Moore told Fox News host Sean Hannity that he had never met Corfman and called the charges of sexual impropriety “politically motivated” as well as “completely false” and “malicious.” Corfman is not seeking financial compensation in the case beyond its legal costs, her lawyer has said. She is asking for a judgment, an apology from Moore and a ban to ensure he doesn’t publicly attack her again.

“The liberal media, in association with some who want to destroy our Country do not want my influence in the 2018 elections and are doing everything they can to stop me,” Moore’s rant continues. “Gays, lesbians, and transgenders have joined forces with those who believe in abortion, sodomy, and destruction of all that we hold dear. Unless we stand together we will lose our Country. Christians can no longer afford to remain silent in these ‘perilous’ times. For we know that in such time (sic) men shall become lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, without natural affection, truce breakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good, traitors, heady, high-minded, lovers of pleasure more than lovers of God. We must fight, an appeal to the God of Heaven is all that is left us!”

Well, that and send him money, of course.

“Please help me fight this battle for the heart and soul of this Nation. Your financial contribution to my legal defense fund is crucial,” he claims. “After over 40 years of public service I cannot back down now. When I stood to bring these values and truths to Washington D. C. I was forced to fight the Washington establishment, the Republican Party, the Democrat Party, the ultra-liberal media and people such as George Soros, Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton, and many others who fear the truth.”

Never mind that George Soros, Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton had nothing to do with it. He was beaten by another Alabama lawyer who did manage to raise $22 million in a campaign to defeat him, some of the money coming from celebrities in Hollywood, perhaps. He forgot to attack Hollywood.

The website set up to raise money shows Moore has received a little more than $32,000 toward a goal of $250,000 since he started the campaign in January.

BREAKING NEWS: Perhaps if they are so broke, the Moore’s should consider putting their Florida beach house on the market for sale. A source who I know personally with direct knowledge of the transaction says up until the January day Doug Jones was sworn in, Kayla Moore was negotiating for renovations on the beach house. After that they called and canceled.

Many people are wondering how and why Moore still has a license to practice law and has not been disbarred for his unethical behavior of using a non-profit organization for political purposes and personal enrichment. It’s not such a mystery why the Trump IRS has done nothing to investigate Moore’s so-called Foundation for Moral Law, since President Trump himself has moved to end the prohibition of political activity on the part of religious non-profits.

“My resources have been depleted and I have struggled to make ends meet, but I have not lost my faith in our God, who is our true source of strength and will never leave or forsake us,” he says in the appeal.

But if it was God’s will that he take his religious message to Washington, why did He allow Moore to lose?

Doug Jones also says he’s a Christian, so it’s not like the devil had anything to do with it. Perhaps the people of Alabama are just tired of demigods and demagoguery and would like to see competent people elected to public office who can make the government and democracy actually work for a change.

Speaking of fund raising, we covered the campaign from start to finish better than any news outlet in the land, and we could use your help to keep doing it. We broke the story on Moore being banned from the Gadsden Mall, which was quoted and linked to by The New Yorker and other news sites and blogs around the world. In effect we beat Steven Bannon and Breitbart News, which supported Moore during the campaign with a budget of $11 million provided by conservative tech billionaire Robert Mercer. To ramp up this news operation and have more of a positive effect in the future, we are only asking for $1 million to continue taking on the dark forces of fake news: Click here to check out our GoFundMe campaign.
