WASHINGTON, D.C. — When Hurricane Ida blew up from New Orleans, through Nashville and up U.S. Interstate 81 through Virginia and Maryland this week, ultimately plowing through Pennsylvania and drowning people in their basements in New York, a cool, dry breeze from the north-northwest blew in behind it and cooled things off in the nation’s capital.

But the storm also transported swarms of tiger mosquitoes [Aedes albopictus] up from the Gulf, making it painful and risky to sit outside and enjoy the cobalt blue skies and low humidity.

What we need is a strong cold front.

And of course the hurricane caused a massive oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.

Oh, well.

Rabbit, rabbit!

An eastern cottontail [Sylvilagus floridanus ] is a New World rabbit, a member of the family Leporidae. It is the most common rabbit species in North America. The population in Shenandoah National Park has never been hunted, so they are not too afraid of people, but please don’t feed the wildlife. They are wild animals and can bite and carry disease: Glynn Wilson

It’s a new month and summer is about to move into the rear view mirror.

According to the Politico Playbook, “Rabbit rabbit!” is an old-timey expression that you’re supposed to say on the first of the month to bring good luck.

“September in Washington is going to be wild, so it can’t hurt.”

Yes, and all the hope on the part of Democrats that President Joe Biden would solve all our problems and unite the country behind science and facts turned out to be an impossible dream, since as Politico noted, “Biden is fighting The Blob.”

The Blob

The Blob 1958 theatrical poster - Can the Rabbit Beat The Blob?

You may recall “The Blob” science fiction horror film, directed by Irvin Yeaworth and released in 1958, written by Kay Linaker and Theodore Simonson. The film stars Steve McQueen (in his feature film debut) and Aneta Corsaut and co-stars Earl Rowe and Olin Howland. “The Blob” was distributed by Paramount Pictures as a double feature with “I Married a Monster from Outer Space.”

The storyline concerns a growing, corrosive, alien amoeboidal entity that crashes to Earth from outer space inside a meteorite. It devours and dissolves citizens in the small communities of Phoenixville and Downingtown, Pennsylvania, growing larger, redder, and more aggressive each time it does so, eventually becoming larger than a building.

In political parlance, “The Blob” is a term popularized by progressive critics of the foreign policy ideas generally embraced by the center left and center right during the last two decades, especially concerning American military interventions (the Blob loves them) and engagement with pariah regimes such as Iran and North Korea (the Blob generally frowns upon those).

Biden Approval Rating Down

SURVEY SAYS — The latest POLITICO/Morning Consult weekly poll shows the Afghanistan pullout is taking a pretty big toll on Biden’s political standing, at least for the time being. Just 39 percent of respondents said the country is on the right track, versus 61 percent who think things “have pretty seriously gone off on the wrong track.”

Biden is underwater for the first time in his presidency, they say, at 47 percent approval and 49 percent disapproval. Just three in 10 respondents give him passing marks on his handling of Afghanistan.

“But all is not lost for the president,” they say. “By a 50% to 41% margin, voters back his decision to end the country’s military presence in Afghanistan by Sept. 11.”

Nine Eleven

Well it is the 20th anniversary of the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon on Sept. 11, 2001, so it’s long past time to get out of that country and let the people there fight their own battles.

Obama got Osama bin Laden. Was that not enough for The Blob?

Labor Day/Covid

After the Labor Day holiday, we will be escaping the mosquito swarms and The Blob by heading back up into the mountains for a few days.

So far, we’ve managed to escape the Delta or Dixie variant of the coronavirus, and produce the definitive report on its origin. But so far these scientific facts have escaped notice by the CIA, the Biden administration, The New York Times and Washington Post, so our always growing audience of readers are the smartest, most informed people in the country and the world.
