MLK Memorial night quote3 - Reflections on Martin Luther King, Civil Rights, Altruism and Artificial Intelligence

I took this picture of the MLK memorial in Washington, and found the speech containing this quote before anyone else was using it: By Glynn Wilson

COULTERVILLE, Calif. – As the sun rises over the Sierra mountain ridge with a clear blue sky as a backdrop, 2,797 miles west of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial in Washington, D.C. on this MLK national holiday, I woke up thinking about were I was last year at this time.

In January, I was hanging out with guitar slinger Wayne Perkins in a big log cabin house east of Birmingham, Alabama, working on a book about the history of rock and roll.

Wayne Perkins: The Story of a Swamper And a Sideman

In late January and early February, I traveled to Muscle Shoals to conduct more research for the book.

But on Monday, Feb. 3, all hell broke loose in Washington as the insane drug addict and world’s richest man and hacker Elon Musk showed up in D.C. and invaded the United States Treasury Department, causing all kinds of economic havoc, including freezing my Social Security funds in a bank account I had for 20 years. After a week long fight with the bank, they closed my account.

I had vowed to retire from daily news and covering politics when Trump was certified the winner in the election in November, 2024. But due to being personally effected by the political and economic crisis, I took up my word sword one more time.

Elon Musk Security Breach Must Be Stopped

When a news director for public radio heard of my crisis, I was recruited to work on stories for public radio, and produced this civil rights anniversary story from Montgomery and Selma. The money I made from the story made up for the loss of my Social Security money in March.

When Trump announced he was inviting himself to speak at the University of Alabama graduation commencement in April, the news director got cold feet and ghosted me, refusing to answer texts, emails or phone calls, apparently so afraid of what Trump might do to the university that no other assignments were forthcoming.

But I continued to report the news anyway on my news website where I am still in business after more than 10 years, marking my 20th anniversary of covering news independent on the web. Not that anyone in my home state or my alma mater will acknowledge this achievement. It’s not the legacy, mainstream media now is it?

Whatever. While in Birmingham, I was having trouble seeing to drive at night, so I got my eyes checked. There I found out I had cataracts, so made a plan to go back to Maryland on the D.C. line for surgery.

Once again volunteering with the National Park Service, I produced and delivered a park ranger program, then vowed to head for California after Labor Day.

Interpreting Our Heritage in Words and Pictures

I made it to St. Louis, Missouri for a few days, spent eight days in Colorado, then finally made it to Coulterville, California at the end of September, and visited Yosemite National Park for the first time by mid-October.

Mission Accomplished

Then to document another milestone, I spent 10 days in San Francisco over the holidays, and I’m now embedded here covering THE most important story of our time: The coming crisis associated with Artificial Intelligence.

Trump will not be around forever. But this technology will be, and it is about to disrupt our world in so many ways. Stay tuned.
