WASHINGTON, D.C. – While every news organization in the land was covering it and Democrats all over social media were watching cable TV talk shows and complaining about House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan of Ohio’s grilling of Attorney General Merrick Garland over Hunter Biden’s laptop, a nothing burger of a story if there ever was one, nobody seemed to be paying attention to Democratic Whip Katherine Clark of Massachusetts or the pending government shutdown by hard right Republicans in the House who are not getting their way.

Clark took to the House Floor on Wednesday to urge the House to instruct conferees to remove MAGA Republicans’ anti-abortion amendment from the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2024.

“A handful of issues has always transcended politics. Our troops – the guardians of our freedom – have always been one of them,” Clark said. “But in the MAGA Republican Party … nothing takes priority over their goal of a nationwide abortion ban.”

The hard right in the House is about to force a government shutdown to try to gut the federal budget, cutting Social Security, Medicaid and Medicare and the IRS appropriation to collect the nation’s taxes, especially from rich Republican donors and their corporate sponsors.

In keeping with their extremist agenda, House Republicans have amended the NDAA to roll back service members’ reproductive freedom – targeting the Department of Defense’s commitment to reimburse the travel of those seeking critical abortion care.

Alabama Senator Tommy Tuberville has been running a one-main filibuster in the Senate to block all military promotions, he says because of this policy.

So you thought the New American Journal was the only news outlet in the country (along with Thom Hartmann on progressive radio) pointing out that what Trump and his MAGA buddies are doing in trying to create an authoritarian regime in Washington is tantamount to fascism?

Well now the Whip in the House is calling it what it is on the House floor.

“Military promotions? Troops’ paychecks? Our national defense bill? All held hostage because extremists want to tear away the reproductive freedoms of the very people fighting for our freedom,” Clark said. “I urge my colleagues: put our country first and instruct the conferees to deliver a defense bill that puts freedom over fascism.”

Perhaps Democrats should be sharing this on Facebook, instead of promoting what the MAGA Republicans are doing as reported by the mainstream media, intent on making money from the sensational clickbait and distracting the American electorate from the real issues facing the country.

I’m sure you heard it here first. I don’t see anybody else covering it.
