Alabama’s Tommy Tuberville says racist white nationalist domestic terrorists are just “Americans?”

The Big Picture –
By Glynn Wilson –

WASHINGTON, D.C. – This all must seem very confusing to people sampling a little news on cable TV and social media. With the death of American newspapers and a downward trend in reading by people in general, it must seem like the extreme heat is making people in Washington crazy.

We have the president of the United States and the Republican head of the CIA out there trying to warn the American people that we must pull together if we are going to stop Russia and compete with China, and the Republican leader of the FBI having to defend himself for investigating Trump even though he was appointed by Trump.

What the hell is going on?

There are stories out there about this dumbfounded Senator from Alabama who apparently does not understand that white nationalists are racist, domestic terrorists who the CIA calls the number one terrorist threat we face domestically.

Alabama’s Tommy Tuberville Mounts a One-Man Blockade of Anti-MAGA Military Promotions

Congress is trying to do part of its job by passing an annual bill to fund the U.S. military, and all anyone’s talking about is abortion. What does abortion have to do with preparing our military to compete with China?

House Democratic Whip Katherine Clark was so pissed off this week that she called a bill passed with a slim majority of Republicans “an extremist manifesto” because it literally bans members of the military from traveling if needed to take care of their own health care.

A divided House voted on Thursday to overturn a Pentagon policy guaranteeing abortion access to service members regardless of where they are stationed, imperiling passage of the annual defense bill as right-wing lawmakers rallied Republicans around their drive to load the measure with conservative policy dictates, according to the New York Times.

The vote was 221 to 213 to attach the proposal to the bill. It was one of a series of controversial amendments that hard-right lawmakers like Matt Gaetz of Florida and Marjorie Taylor Green of Georgia demanded be put on the floor as a condition for allowing the legislation to move forward.

Democrats vehemently opposed the move, saying on Thursday that they could not support the defense bill if it carried provisions to limit access to abortions.

“The MAGA majority is using our defense bill to get one stop closer to the only thing they really care about: a nationwide abortion ban,” Representative Katherine M. Clark of Massachusetts, the Democratic whip, said in a floor speech.

House Votes to Limit Abortion Access in the Military, Bowing to the Right

“Let’s look at how unprecedented this situation is,” Clark explained in an email blast to supporters. “We had the national defense bill that came out of committee just a few weeks ago with a nearly unanimous vote. A bipartisan bill, as is the tradition in Congress. And we have the GOP who said we are going to scrap that bipartisan bill, put a big ‘You Are Not Welcome’ sign out in front of our military bases to women, people of color, LGBTQ, and create a bill that is extreme.

“There has been an unprecedented response from Democrats where we have the Ranking Member, Adam Smith, saying he will now oppose this bill,” she said. “We have Democrats who have never voted against a national defense bill who will not be voting for this bill because it has been taken hostage by the extremists in the GOP.”

She wanted to make it clear that Democrats continue support of American service members.

“This is work that Democrats did: making sure that our military families have the housing they deserve, taking away a co-payment for contraception. These are Democratic priorities and issues,” she said. “So it is very difficult to vote against those – to vote against this bill. That is not easy.

“But what we’ve seen is this bill has been transformed into an extremist manifesto,” she said. “And so, we’re going to continue, as we have done when we were in the majority – putting the American people first and what they need. And what they need is a strong military. And we know that this bill is going nowhere in the Senate because it is disgusting and outrageous. So, we will have a chance to work with the Senate and bring a national security bill back that we can support.”

She said the Republicans continue their “assault on freedom.”

“This is another step in their march towards a national abortion ban,” she said. “The message here is outrageous to women service members. They’re saying: ‘You are not allowed to travel for the health care that you need while you are serving our country, defending liberty?

“And that’s why we’ve seen this issue be so wildly unpopular with the American people in election after election and poll after poll: because the American people understand this is fundamentally taking away their liberty,” she said. “This is an assault on freedom – and they did not just stop with abortion. They went right down the line saying that diversity is not a strength, but a weakness. The American people don’t agree with that.”

“I mean, I really cannot overstate how divisive and how racist and misogynist this bill has become,” she said, “as we have seen Speaker McCarthy capitulate once again to the extreme elements of his party.”

But the MAGA army only cheers, not realizing that they only doom their own future and that of their kids and grandkids. If this extremist partisan divide continues, our very survival as a species is on the line.

The Future of Humanity on Planet Earth

Would it be too much to ask to demand that these idiot politicians stop playing games with all of our lives and get down to the business of making this government and democracy work for all “the people?” Stop being so ridiculously stupid.

Does it really take appearing to be as stupid as possible for Republicans to get elected to office these days? If so, you are not going to get elected for much longer. Russia and China will just use smart technology, artificial intelligence and chat bots to take over the world.

And there will be former Auburn football coach Tommy Tuberville on Fox News, saying, “… but, but, but … ABORTION?”

The Lincoln Project, a conservative Republican anti-fascist, anti-Trump third party political group, is running an ad now calling Tuberville “a traitor.”
